A healing place: Reimagining the modern botanic garden as a physic garden

AbstractI have long promoted botanic gardens as a potent mix of nature, culture and science. Triggered by the COVID‐19 pandemic and the community's changing relationship with outdoor spaces, I want to add another vital element: the botanic garden as a reimagined physic garden. Not just a collection of medicinal plants, but a healing place. The value of nature, of gardens, and particularly of botanic gardens, for keeping us in “good health” is, if not self‐evident, then progressively confirmed by social research. The modern botanic garden as a physic garden embraces the creation and further development of botanic gardens in places where there are more people than “natural” diversity of plants; encourages a medical approach to addressing complex problems like climate change—targeting the root causes first, curing if possible, or if not, relieving symptoms and build resistance; favors a triaging approach to conservation for more effective use of resources; and provides plant rescue and restoration as the equivalent of a human Intensive Care Unit, with “plant ambulances” dispatched after natural (including human‐induced) disasters. Our landscapes and collections are for many their first contact with a complex plant environment—nature. That contact is also good for our health.

Ethnobotanical Study of Medicinal plants used for Traditional Diarrhea Treatment in North-East Algeria

The objective of this study is to aid in the identification and documentation of medicinal plants that are utilized in traditional local pharmacopeia for the treatment of diarrhea in four provinces located in the northeast region of Algeria. The ethnobotanical survey was conducted during 2019-2020. All users of medicinal plants in those regions were interviewed using a guide questionnaire. Stratified sampling was used to collect information on medicinal plants. Furthermore, the study established the relative importance of the species and estimated the informant consensus factor (ICF) for the medicinal plants included in research. The study has found a total of 52 species that are commonly employed in the treatment of diarrhea in four specific provinces of Algeria. These species are categorized into 26 families and 22 genera. The most frequently quoted plants (over 10 quotations) were Artemisia herba alba Asso. (52 quotations) with the highest (FC = 43.33%); Punica granatum L. (50 quotations, FC = 41.67%); Origanum vulgaire L. (32 quotations, FC = 26.67%); Juniperus phoenicea L. (29 quotations, FC = 24.17%), and Ceratonia siliqua L. (19 quotations, FC = 15.83%). The most common plant families were Lamiaceae and Rosaceae (10 and 6 plants, respectively). Species morphological type analyses show that herbs were most represented (46.16%). For different organs used, leaves and fruits were the most used (27.15% and 26.35%, respectively). Although the infusion (55.81%) constituted the prevailing approach to drug preparation, the results showed that many kinds of plants can be used to treat diarrhea in Algeria. The study has enhanced the collection of medicinal plants with anti-diarrheal properties and has contributed to the advancement of knowledge in traditional medicine while also preserving local indigenous knowledge.

Kalmegh Andrographispaniculata (Burm. F.) Wall. Ex Nees is one of the main ingredients used in many formulations like Mahavishgarbhataila etc, India`s various part having favourable for Kalamegh plant, but geographical environmental influences the physico-chemical properties like Ash, extractives values and phytoconstituents. All samples passes ayurvedic Pharmacopeial standards but strength showed variations and Belgaum region showed best for Kalamegh . Thus, study revels that medicinal plants collection habitat must be considered.

Can the Bhutan Yak Federation Revitalize Waning Yak Herders’ Enthusiasm and Rejuvenate the Declining Yak Farming in Bhutan

Yaks, native to Bhutan and other Himalayan regions, play a crucial role in the livelihoods of highlanders, serving as a sources of milk products, meat, transportation, fiber, and even dung used as fuelwood for cooking. Concerned about the perceived decline in the country’s yak population, the Bhutan Yak Federation (BYF) was established in 2019 to support highlanders. Presently, the BYF consists of 268 males and 203 females, representing 1067 yak rearing households. Its primary objectives include advocating for policy and investment support and promoting yak farming as a vibrant and sustainable enterprise. To gain a deeper understating of BYF’s roles and functions, this study focused on the Lingshi and Sephu yak cooperatives under the Thimphu and Wangduephodrang districts, conducting phone interviews with 40 cooperative members. The study revealed that highlanders primarily generate income through the sale of cordyceps, followed by yak products, portering services, and medicinal plants collection.

Sustainable approach for the collection and processing of medicinal and aromatic plants in Hungary

AbstractHungary is a Central European country that is rich in medicinal and aromatic wild plant species; in rural livelihoods, the collection, use, process, and trade of these plants are traditionally important contributors. However, due to several recent changes touching the sector, the natural ecosystems, biodiversity, and collectors - who generally belong to poorer social groups – are affected negatively.The paper aims to introduce the Hungarian herbal sector from a holistic perspective, including its economic, environmental, and human dimensions, with a particular focus on sustainability. In this context, the purpose of the article is to discover this field as comprehensibly as possible and present it from both theoretical and practical aspects. Another objective is to collect the best practices and feasible solutions from the field in connection with promoting a harmonious, as well as economically prosperous relationship between nature and local people. This integrated approach helps show the industry's strengths and advantages, as well as its weaknesses and challenges. Based on the findings, the paper attempts also to propose some recommendations for the future.

EXTRACTION AND CULTIVATION OF MEDICINAL PLANTS IN THE HOMESTEAD FARM “DUNDURI” OF LUDZA MUNICIPALITY

The aim of the work: to evaluate the development possibilities of the economic activity of the homestead farm “Dunduri” by collecting and cultivating medicinal plants.
 The work was developed the basis on European Union and Latvian regulatory documents and guidelines applicable to the collection and processing of medicinal plants, special literature and homestead data.
 It is important to understand what steps to take, what problems to face and how will affect activities in the future in the field of harvesting medicinal plants. 
 The work examines the extraction of medicinal plants in Europe and Latvia, the guidelines for collecting and growing plants and the classification of medicinal plants, provides a description of the resources of the homestead farm “Dunduri”, examines the growing and harvesting technologies of medicinal plants and their realization possibilities, analyses the farm economic activities and development opportunities.

Short Communication: Ethnobotanical survey of medicinal plants for wound healing in Dir Upper District, Pakistan

Abstract. Jawadullah, Akhtar N. 2023. Short Communication: Ethnobotanical survey of medicinal plants for wound-healing in Dir Upper District, Pakistan. Asian J Ethnobiol 6: 145-152. Medicinal plants have been used since ancient time by the communities as an alternative to the synthetic medicine, which have adverse side effects and is not available to every individual. This study reports medicinal plants used for wound-healing by the local peoples in Dir Upper District, northern area of Pakistan. A semi-structured questionnaire was used to collect ethnomedicinal data by interviewing 50 informants of different ages (25 to 90 years old). Plant samples were collected as herbarium to be identified in the laboratory. The result shows a total of 20 plant species, each belonging to different families, were used for wound-healing. The majority of growth forms of such plants were herbs (35%) and trees (35%), followed by shrubs (25%) and climbers (5%). The plant parts used for healing were leaves of the plant (45%), followed by plant bark (10%), whole plant (10%), plant roots (10%), fruit peel (5%), gum (5%), bulb (5%), rhizome (5%) and latex (5%). Furthermore, external applications were more common than oral consumption to promote wound-healing. Berberis lycium Royle, Curcuma longa L. and Punica protopunica Balf.fil. were the most cited species used to heal wounds. This study revealed that there is an array of plant biodiversity among Pakistanis for the purpose of wound-healing. This is a result of the socioeconomic status and limited access to modern health services and their preference for folk medicine. Further studies should be planned to create an online database for a collection of therapeutic medicinal plants and their traditional healing potentials.

Taxonomic diversity of medicinal plant collection from National Botanical Garden (Institute) ,,Al. Ciubotaru”

The article presents new data on the current state of the Collection of Medicinal Plants from the National Botanical Garden (Institute) ,,Al. Ciubotaru”, the dynamics of taxa increase over the last decade, ways to raise and maintain the gene pool. The taxonomic diversity of medicinal plant existing currently in the collection is given. Recent taxonomic inventory of medicinal plants collection led to identification of 367 taxa, belonging to 3 phylums, 5 classes, 66 botanical families and 184 genera. During the period 2013-2022 the collection was enriched with 82 taxa obtained through the international exchange of seeds (Index Seminum), as well as from the local spontaneous flora.

Evaluation of Antibacterial and Antibiofilm Activity of Cucurbita Maxima Leaf Extract Against Streptococcus Mutans Isolated from Orthodontic Patients

Aim The aim of this investigation was to evaluate the antimicrobial activity and anti-biofilm activity of Cucurbita Maxima leaf extract on Streptococcus mutans isolated from dental plaque of subjects undergoing orthodontic treatment. Methodology Dental plaque samples were collected from out patients undergoing orthodontic treatment. From the plaque samples Biochemical Characterisation of Streptococcus mutans then Collection of Medicinal Plants was done followed by Preparation of Solvent Extract and stock Solution. Evaluation of Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) of the plant extract and Biofilm Inhibition Assay with Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrum Analysis (GCMS) was carried out. Results The MIC was identified to be 1.25mg/ml. The biofilm inhibition assay showed that the extract did not inhibit the formation of the biofilm. The GCMS analysis identified twenty five constituent compounds from the crude extract.  Conclusion  The C. maxima leaf extract showed antibacterial activity against S. mutans and the minimum inhibitory concentration was identified at 1.25mg/ml. The extract did not inhibit the formation of biofilm. 

Methods of Processing Medicinal Plants: A Semantic Study of the Use of Verbs in Sesotho Sa Leboa

From time immemorial, medicinal plants have been common traditional medicines for treating diseases and ailments in most households. Even today, plants are used for treating ailments and diseases such as the flu and coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). This article investigates the semantic use of verbs for collection, preparation and administration as methods of processing medicinal plants in Sesotho sa Leboa. Most of the medicinal plants, like folktales, are extinct, so by writing this study the ethnobotanical knowledge of the communities will be promoted and preserved. Medicine from medicinal plants is mostly used in a traditional medical healthcare system. Recent studies have indicated how the medicinal plants form the foundation of traditional medicine and how these are sometimes incorporated into allopathic or biomedical medicine. For the medicinal plant to attain its medicinal value, several processes take place and verbs are used to describe them (processes). Specific meaning is attached to the verbs of methods used during the collection, preparation and administration of medicinal plants. Ethnobotanical theory forms the framework of this article, supported by the theory of linguistics. A qualitative approach is used to explain concepts in the collection, interpretation and analysis of data. Data is collected from existing documents and auto-ethnography. The study found that verbs used in the methods of processing medicinal plants are semantically used in relation to specific parts of the plant.

Effects of atmospheric dust particles on common medicinal plants in an industrial area of West Bengal, India.

The exposure of atmospheric dust particles on four common medicinal plants (Ocimum sanctum, Andrographis paniculata, Catharanthus roseous, and Kaempferia galanga, which are available in the study area and cultivated by the local people for medicinal purposes) affects their growth, levels of essential biochemical constituents and heavy metal concentration. The plant species were grown by pot cultivation in an industrial area with high levels of coal dust to assess the capacity of heavy metals accumulation in their leaves and changes in allometry and biochemical parameters. The results showed that annual average SPM and dustfall varied between 195.88 to 645.97 μg/m3 and 17.55 to 41.16 g/m2/month, respectively. Dustfall at different polluted sites was 2.4, 2.1, 1.5, 1.4, and 2.3 times higher than at the control site. The most prevalent heavy metal in atmospheric particulate matter was Zn, followed by Pb, Ni, Cu, Co, and Cd. Plant allometry measurements such as height, stem width, root length, petiole length, and leaf area are shown to have a strong and significant (p<0.05) negative correlation with dustfall and SPM. Total chlorophyll and RWC were inversely proportional to the dust load present in all the species. Except for Andrographis paniculata, chlorophyll and leaf-extracted pH of plant species were moderately correlated with APTI, whereas no correlation was noticed for ascorbic acid. A positive correlation between SPM and heavy metals in leaves was observed. The results implied that the cultivation and collection of medicinal plants from the study area could be potentially toxic to human health.

The results of the initial introduction of &lt;i&gt;Bupleurum aureum&lt;/i&gt; Fisch. ex Hoffm. in the middle taiga subzone of the Komi Republic

The paper summarizes the results of a long-term introduction study of plants of golden boletus in the collection of medicinal plants of the Botanical Garden of the Institute of Biology of the Komi Scientific Center of the Ural Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences. The primary introduction of the species into new growing conditions became possible only by transferring living plants to cultivation from the places of natural growth of the Tomsk Region, followed by propagation of plants from seeds of their own reproductions. The optimal methods of seed propagation of this species in the conditions of the North were revealed: winter sowing with freshly harvested seeds and self-sowing of seeds with further transplantation of emerging seedlings to a new plot with a feeding area of 30 30 cm golden is distinguished by high survival rate, winter hardiness and stability in the coenosis. The mass transition of plants into the generative period occurred in the second third year of life. The phenology and dynamics of plant growth have been studied. The rhythm of the seasonal development of plants in. golden in culture in the North corresponds to the new soil and climatic conditions of cultivation. The growing season is 96100 days. Golden boletus regularly forms full-fledged seeds, which, after undergoing natural stratification under snow cover, germinate in the spring and give a large self-sowing. Real seed productivity (the number of mature full-fledged seeds) in plants c. golden of different ages varies over the years from 420 to 570 seeds per shoot. The morphobiological signs of the generative shoot were studied in culture and the amplitude of their variability was determined. High and very high levels of individual variability of signs of the floral zone of the shoot indicate the possibility of targeted selection of more productive individuals within the population. For the first time, data on the content of proteins and its amino acid composition in plants are presented. The mass fraction of nitrogen (in terms of crude protein) in the aboveground phytomass was 1,51,8%. In proteins from aboveground phytomass, 17 amino acids were identified, including 7 essential ones (threonine, valine, methionine, isoleucine, leucine, phenylalanine, lysine). The proportion of essential amino acids averaged 39% of the total. The highest rates were noted for amino acids: glutamic, aspartic, leucine, lysine, alanine and valine 13,1, 10,7, 9,2, 8,1, 6,7 and 6,2% respectively.

Development of an ethnobiology supplement book based on the study of medicinal plants in Wonawa District, Kepulauan Yapen Serui Regency

This study aims to produce a supplement book for ethnobiology courses based on research on traditional medicinal plants in Wonawa District, Kepulauan Yapen Serui Regency. The type of research is research and development. The ADD (analysis, design, and development) stage of the ADDIE model is applied to the development of supplement books. Interviews are used for data collection and identification of medicinal plants. Experts validate books made while students fill out response questionnaires. The validity criteria for supplement books with a value of 88.63% based on the findings of the research are Very Valid. In the Excellent category are responses to supplement books from students with an average rate of 87.5%. The developed supplement book can be used for student learning because it fulfills the valid criteria and the response has been overwhelmingly positive.

Diversity and traditional knowledge of medicinal plants used by Shui people in Southwest China

BackgroundThe Shui are a small Chinese sociolinguistic group living in Sandu Shui Autonomous County, south of Guizhou Province. The Shui people have accumulated and developed rich traditional medicinal knowledge, which has played a significant role in their healthcare. Traditional ethnic herbal medicines, like Shui ethnomedicine, have become an important resource of rural development in Guizhou Province. However, not much research has been conducted to document the medicinal plants traditionally used by the Shui people. This study’s aims are (1) to record the current use of medicinal plants in Sandu County and associated traditional knowledge, including the medicinal plant species used and the types of diseases treated by local healers and any unique aspects of their preparations; (2) to analyze the most important medicinal plant species using relative frequency of citation (RFC); and (3) to provide useful information and data for possible future development and application of ethnomedicine and promote the conservation and preservation of Shui traditional medicinal knowledge.MethodsField surveys were conducted between July 2015 and August 2022 in Sandu County. A total of 15 local healers as key informants were interviewed. An additional 132 informants from villages and local markets were also interviewed through semistructured interviews and focal group discussions. Local Shui healers were followed during their collection of medicinal plants in the fields and recorded the medicinal plants’ names, uses, and parts used. An ANOVA was used to evaluate the number of medicinal plants recognized by local healers across age-groups and townships, and relative frequencies of citation values were determined for the recorded medicinal plants.ResultsIn this study, data collected from 15 Shui healers and 132 other informants were analyzed. The healers used fresh or dried parts of 505 plant species as medicine to treat a wide range of conditions and diseases. These plants belong to 405 genera from 156 families, with Fabaceae being the highest represented plant family. The Jiuqian township had the highest distribution of per capita healers (pch); only one local healer was in Zhonghe. Of the 15 local healers, only two were younger than 40 years of age. There is a major concern that traditional medicinal knowledge may be lost if there are not sufficient trainees or suitable successors. Among the common medicinal plants, most are herbaceous and the Shui typically use the whole plant in their medicines. There are 85 different recorded diseases treated by Shui medicinal plants, and among them, rheumatism and bone fractures have the largest number of species used. Three medicinal plant species, Isodon amethystoides, Asarum insigne, and Acorus tatarinowii, are the most commonly used ethnomedicines by the Shui people.ConclusionThis study demonstrated that Shui people have extensive knowledge of a diverse range of medicinal plants, many of which had not been systematically recorded before the current study. Further research on the chemistry, pharmacology, and toxicity of Shui medicinal plants will be useful for developing functional foods or pharmaceutical products, particularly those of Isodon amethystoides, Asarum insigne, and Acorus tatarinowii. Additionally, as a result of rapid economic growth, fewer young people in Shui communities pursue traditional medicinal studies. Only 15 traditional Shui healers remain in the county, and only two of them are below the age of 40 years. Therefore, to conserve Shui’s traditional medicinal knowledge, initiatives and policies are required to regenerate, strengthen, and promote Shui medicinal knowledge.

Revisiting the traditional medicine of the tribals in the Jungle Mahals, 1947–2000

This paper deals with the medical system of the tribals (Santals, Oraons, Sabar and Birhors) of Jungle Mahals in eastern India. It also discusses the indigenous system of knowledge about the collection, preparation and medicinal practice highlighting the socio-cultural and ecological context of medicinal plants. The region faced excessive pressure from over-exploitation and the growing demand for forest resources resulting in biodiversity loss and species extinction. In the post-independent period, there was a major transformation in treatment methods among the healers. Most of the healers left the practice of exorcism due to increased awareness on witchcraft practices. This study found low levels of overlap in medicinal floras, even in the case of tribal communities who closely related linguistically, culturally, and ecologically. The efficacy of the medicine depends on the extent to which the healers properly followed the rules for the collection of medicinal plants, drug preparation and application. This medical practice is popular among the poverty-stricken tribal communities as they could not take facilities of western medicine because of their poverty and the high cost of allopathic medicine.

Medicinal plants used as indigenous herbs for anti-helminthic activity of North-Eastern region of India

Gastrointestinal helminthosis is a serious health issue. The current study could be used to find prospective anthelmintic botanicals and create new anthelmintic medications with improved properties and efficacy that have been used in north east of India. The eight states, Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Sikkim, and Tripura make up the north-eastern region of India. It is arguably the most lavish collection of medicinal plants in existence. Nearly 80% of the world's population relies on conventional medicines for basic medical services, which include the use of extracts from medicinal plants. It is thought that the foundation of conventional medicine is made up of medicinal plants.

An Ethnobotanical Study in Ceylanlı Village (Kırıkhan/Hatay-Türkiye)

This study was carried out to determine the ethnobotanical characteristics of some plants distributed in Ceylanlı village (Kırıkhan/Hatay) on the slopes of Amanos Mountain. As a result of the field studies carried out between 2019 and 2021 and the interviews with the local people, it was determined that 75 taxa belonging to 41 families were used by the local people in the research area. The local names of the plants, the harvest season, the parts used, the usage purposes, and forms were determined by face-to-face interviews with different local people in their houses, farms, gardens or natural areas. The families having the highest number of using taxa in the area were determined to be Asteraceae and Lamiaceae (8 taxa each), Rosaceae (6 taxa), Amaryllidaceae, Brassicaceae, and Fabaceae (4 taxa each). In total 116 different uses belonging to the plants in the study area were determined, including uses for medical purposes such as wounds, respiratory tract, and stomachic diseases (47 taxa), food (20 taxa), daily items (6 taxa), spice (4 taxa), firewood (3 taxa), and for other different purposes (14 taxa). The obtained results were discussed by comparing them with the relevant literature. Our results show that most of the plants identified were collected by local people from their natural habitats. The local community in our study area was informed to reduce the collection of natural medicinal plants unconsciously and about the importance of cultivating medicinal and aromatic plants. It is believed that this study will contribute to all relevant studies at national and international scales.

Polyphenol Compounds and Antioxidant Activity of Salvia officinalis L. and Salvia sclarea L.

The plants from Salvia L. (sage) genus are well-known as culinary, ornamental, aromatic, and medicine plants widely distributed in the world. The plant raw of these plants contains numerous biologically active compounds that determine the different biological activities. This study aimed to evaluate the antioxidant activity and polyphenol content of ethanol extracts of Salvia officinalis L. and S. sclarea L. during vegetation. Plant raw material was collected from an experimental collection of aromatic and medicinal plants of the Institute of Climate Smart Agriculture of the National Academy of Agrarian Sciences of Ukraine (Kherson region, v. Plodove) in 2020–2021. It investigated polyphenol, phenolic acid, flavonoid content, molybdenum-reducing power of extracts, and radical scavenging activity by the DPPH method. The total polyphenol compound content was 24.52–95.62 mg GAE.g-1 (mg gallic acid equivalent per gram) for S. officinalis and 29.39–91.02 mg GAE.g-1 for S. sclarea. The total phenolic acid content of S. officinalis and S. sclarea extracts was 10.18–40.23 and 10.13–36.01 mg CAE.g-1 (mg caffeic acid equivalent per gram), respectively. The total flavonoid content was from 13.73 to 55.38 mg QE.g-1 (quercetin equivalen per gram) for S. officinalis and from 25.91 to 53.82 mg QE.g-1 for S. sclarea. The free radical scavenging activity of ethanol extracts of S. officinalis and S. sclarea was 6.05–8.59 mg TE.g-1 (mg Trolox equivalent per gram) and 6.56–8.03 mg TE.g-1, respectively. The extracts of S. officinalis showed molybdenum-reducing power from 56.25 to 218.67 mg TE.g-1 and S. sclarea extracts from 35.42 to 162.65 mg TE.g-1. A strong correlation was found between free radical scavenging activity and polyphenol compound groups (r = 0.723–0.868), and between molybdenum-reducing power and polyphenol compound groups (r = 0.759–0.927) for S. officinalis. Strong relations were found in extracts of S. sclarea between molybdenum-reducing power and investigated polyphenol compounds (r = 0.802–0.909), whereas, free radical scavenging activity weak correlated with investigated compounds. Thus, this study showed that S. officinalis and S. sclarea extracts are a source of antioxidant compounds that can be used in the pharmaceutical and food industries. Most content of antioxidant compounds is found in the leaf and inflorescence extracts.

The content of saicosaponins and flavonols in different organs of the aerial part of the golden snail (&lt;i&gt;Bupleurum aureum&lt;/i&gt; Fisch. ex Hoffm.) upon introduction in the Komi Republic

The results of an introductory study of Bupleurum aureum in the collection of medicinal plants of the Botanical Garden of the Institute of Biology of the Komi Science Center of the Ural Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences are presented. It has been revealed that plants of this species are characterized by high winter hardiness and resistance in culture. For 102110 days of vegetation, they go through all phases of development and form full-fledged seeds. As a result of the research, the morphological features of the generative shoot have been studied. Under the conditions of culture, the golden boletus is able to form 26 (7) generative shoots per individual with a height of 109137 cm. The distribution of saicosaponins and flavonols in the aerial organs of the golden voles has been studied using the methods of differential spectrophotometry and chromato-mass spectrometry. The highest rates of biologically active substances in the phase of mass flowering have been found in the leaves and inflorescences of the golden lily, the lowest in the stems. It has been found that the concentration of biologically active substances in the stem leaves depends on the position of the leaves on the shoot. The mass fraction of saikosaponins in the leaves has increased from bottom to top along the shoot from 1,66 to 3,07%, flavonols from 1,75 to 4,5%. The maximum amount of flavonols have been found in inflorescences complex umbrellas (6,23%). The obtained analytical data allow us to state that the above-ground phytomass (leaf, inflorescence) of cultivated plants of golden boletus is characterized by high levels of saikosaponins and flavonols and can be recommended for use as a medicinal plant material.

Traditional knowledge and diversity of medicinal plants in Hindukush range, Tehsil Mastuj, Chitral, Pakistan: An ethnobotany survey

Background: The aim of the current study was to elaborate the indigenous knowledge about the use of medicinal plants in the Hindukush range, Tehsil Mastuj, Chitral, Pakistan. The study's goal was to use quantitative ethnobotanical indices to chronicle indigenous knowledge about the treatment of various disorders, as well as to locate and describe traditional applications of medicinal plants in the area to highlight key medicinal plant species by comparing the results to previously published ethnobotanical and pharmacological data. The medicinal flora is on the verge of extinction due to overgrazing and injudicious use. Methods: We conducted interviews with residents of Mastuj. Semi-structured protocols with a free list of plants were used to collect information, as well as botanical collection and identification of mentioned plants. Use Value (UV) and Informant Agreement Ratio (IAR) were used to analyze ethnobotanical data. Results: 44 plants belonging to 25 families were identified. Of them 1 family was gymnosperm, and 24 families were angiosperms. There were 36 wild plants, 4 wild and cultivated, 3 cultivated plants. The information collected from the study area revealed that 38 plants were used for the treatment of various ailments and diseases i.e., for cough, backache, skin diseases, dysentery, eczema, diarrhea, purgative, typhoid, rheumatism, narcosis, dyspepsia, malaria, tuberculosis, bronchitis, leprosy, jaundice, vomiting, wheals, lumbago, oedema, and as vermifuge and anthelmintic. Conclusion: Local communities have kept their traditional ways of life, relying on wild and cultivated plants for food, fuel, fodder, building materials, and crude drugs. Elders and health practitioners in the study area are knowledgeable about indigenous et al. medicinal plants, whereas young people are less interested in herbal treatments. As a result, traditional knowledge ethnomedicine is on the verge of extinction. In situ and ex situ conservation measures should be implemented to ensure the preservation and long-term use of such medicinal plant species, particularly those with economic and pharmaceutical importance. Residents should be properly trained and guided in the collection, drying, storage, and preservation of medicinal plants.
